December 31, 2016, University Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta has officially appointed the new rector of the period 2016-2020 Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, M.P. replace the period 2012-2016 Rector Prof. Dr. Bambang Cipto, M.A. In this inauguration, Rector of UMY period the 2016-2020 Dr.Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, M.P. exposes that as the University which has Islamic values UMY should bring a value to reflect the education from the best University in Europe or the Middle East in creating student who has Muslim educational values in accordance with slogan of UMY “Unggul dan Islami”. In addition, he also describes the target in pushing forward UMY to became 1000 World Class University. Upon inauguration, MGAA UMY congratulated upon the inauguration of the new UMY rector Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, M.P. Besides, MGAA UMY thanks to rector UMY period 2012-2016, Prof. Dr. Bambang Cipto, M.A.
